Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The Hoops Family Children's Hospital's ten-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is designed for children who need more specialized care and closer observation than children in the Pediatrics Unit. One of only three in West Virginia, the PICU staff focuses its expertise and resources on the specialized needs of critically ill or injured infants, children and adolescents, as well as those recovering from high-risk surgery.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is a multidisciplinary unit where pediatric intensivists, pediatric subspecialists, therapists and nurses specially trained in pediatric critical care work together to provide the best care possible for their patients. The PICU also has four beds with step-down capabilities and a state-of-the-art computer monitoring system.
The staff practices family-centered care, which means that they will keep you up-to-date about your child’s condition, and provide the information you need to make informed decisions about his or her care. To encourage family involvement, the unit offers around-the-clock visitation and special emotional support for families. Whenever possible, PICU patients participate in special events scheduled by the Hoops Family Children's Hospital to relax and entertain children and their families. The PICU staff understands that life-threatening situations are frightening to children and families alike. The unit offers a child-friendly environment, and patient rooms are designed with your child's spirits and privacy in mind.
