Hoops Day Parade Delivers Holiday Magic for Pediatric Patients and Families

Friday, December 12, 2025

The Hoops Family Children's Hospital (HFCH) Child Life Department brought holiday joy to young patients and their families during its annual Hoops Day Parade, a beloved tradition designed to brighten spirits and create moments of magic throughout the children's hospital.

The Hoops Day Parade transformed the hospital's hallways into a cheerful parade route filled with music, costumes and colorful displays. This year was even more special because for the first time, teams from across Marshall Health Network (MHN) joined the celebration, expanding participation beyond Cabell Huntington Hospital staff. Nearly 20 floats and 100 employees came together to spread holiday cheer to pediatric patients receiving care during the season.

Serving as this year's parade MCs were Jacob Kilgore, MD. MPH, FAAP, chief quality officer of MHN and Kaitlin Shaver, MSN, RN, CCRN, director of HFCH and Maternity Services at Cabell Huntington Hospital, who kept the excitement flowing through each festive moment.

Children enjoyed North Pole-approved treats while choosing their favorite float, taking in a lineup that included themes inspired by National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Mario Kart, Little Debbie Christmas tree cakes, Grinchmas, teams of spirited elves and visits from MHN's beloved pet therapy dogs. The parade concluded with a grand appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus, who greeted patients, families and staff with holiday warmth.

"The Hoops Day Parade is one of the brightest days of the year for our pediatric patients and our team," said Melanie Akers, DNP, MBA, RN, vice president of Women and Children's Services at MHN. "The creativity, energy and compassion from staff across Marshall Health Network create an unforgettable experience that brings joy when it's needed most."

The annual parade reflects HFCH's commitment to family-centered care, ensuring that even during challenging times, children can experience moments of wonder, comfort and celebration.
